Sweetheart Day

Now in its 6th Year, Sweetheart Day (or Show Your Heart) is our flagship campaign with the primary aim of raising much-needed awareness of congenital and childhood acquired heart disease.

The campaign is focused on Valentine’s Day (February 14) or for our community, International Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day. This day is important to showcase all the brave heart warriors that live with the impact of this disease every day.

What is Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)?

Congenital heart disease (CHD), affects eight babies born in Australia every day (that’s one every three hours). Four precious lives are lost each week, making this complex condition with no known cure, one of the leading causes of infant death in the country.

Despite being a serious life-threatening condition, over 65,000 Australian babies, children and adults are currently living with CHD, yet they will face unique challenges for the rest of their lives, including repeated heart surgeries and ongoing medical treatment. The impact of having a heart child is life-changing for the entire family and one that leads to enormous emotional and financial stress. With CHD impacting one in every 100 births, a further 3,000 babies are expected to be born with CHD in 2021

Our Mission

As demand for CHD support services grows, HeartKids is hoping to expand its services for families by continuing its 1800 Helpline, parent education programs, family financial assistance, and in-hospital support initiatives which include its unique heart beads program.

HeartKids’ goal in 2021 is to increase access to our support services and programs across Australia, with a particular focus on those living in isolated communities.

HeartKids is Australia’s only national charity dedicated to supporting those impacted by CHD and is a critical lifeline for thousands of Australian families. Funds raised from Sweetheart Day will go towards our support services and programs nationwide.
