Archer's Story

When most families are celebrating their child’s first birthday with cake and balloons, Samantha and Terry Luck were in Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital, where their son Archer was undergoing open heart surgery for a congenital heart defect.

Diagnosed with congenital heart disease (CHD) when he was one day old, Archer hasn’t let adversity stop him from developing into an adventurous, curious, and cheerful little boy.

According to mum Samantha, “Archer is a true inspiration to us. His curiosity and cheerful spirit continue to make us and those around him happy and smile every day. Archer’s independence, thirst for learning and care for others shows us what a genuinely loving person he is. You can’t help but smile when you’re around him.”

Throughout the stressful journey that every CHD family experiences, HeartKids has helped Archer and his family.

“HeartKids has been an amazing support during our stay in the hospital providing any resources we needed and also providing activities to keep our eldest son, Jake, busy while Archer was in hospital which isn’t always an easy task.

“Throughout the year HeartKids has provided an inviting and friendly environment to get to know and speak with other heart kid parents, which has meant more than anyone would know. HeartKids has meant so much to us as a family. They provide much needed support and guidance and we would be truly lost without them guiding us through this maze of CHD,” said Samantha.
