Anakin is one of the faces of the Sweetheart Day campaign.
Anakin was first diagnosed with his heart defect at his parents' 20-week pre-natal scan. It came as a shock to his parents as they had a healthy little girl. Born with a deformed right side aortic arch and left subclavian artery which was repaired shortly after birth.
Anakin is still having respiratory system issues since his surgery which has been challenging for the family.
"It has been extremely difficult at times but has made us and everyone around us so grateful for what we have and how precious our time is," says mum Nikita.
"As a parent, we definitely felt that at the time we were spending a lot more time with one child and felt guilty but now they are the best of friends and have the closest bond, it is more than we could have asked for. Our daughter couldn't be more protective of Anakin."
"HeartKids have been amazing, through every event that we attend we meet like-minded families and staff who have supported and continue to support us.The HeartKids staff at the hospital when Anakin had his surgery gave me a shoulder to cry on and supporting advice to help us through what was one of the most challenging times of our lives."
Eight babies are born with congenital heart disease in Australia every day. Sadly, 4 babies die a week from the disease. Unfortunately, CHD is incurable, and the journey is far from over.
This Sweetheart Day, join us in the fight against congenital or childhood acquired heart disease and help raise awareness and funds. Help families like Anakin's.
